Meta's new Threads app hits 30 million users in less than a day

The day after Meta's new texting app, Threads, launched, it saw a surge in new users unmatched by any other company looking to compete with ailing social media platforms, or almost any other app in the past decade.
Two million people downloaded the app, widely seen as a Twitter copycat, within two hours of its launch Wednesday night. Signups had surpassed 70 million as of Friday morning, a number CEO Mark Zuckerberg said had "far exceeded our expectations." The Verge reports that users have posted more than 95 million posts and garnered 190 million likes, according to the company's internal data.

Twitter and its owner, Elon Musk, haven't ignored the company's early success either, using the platform to criticize the app on Thursday night. Twitter's legal team was quick to threaten legal action against Threads, reportedly accusing Meta in a letter of engaging in "unlawful misappropriation" of its trade secrets.
Who has joined threads?
According to data provided to Time by Sensor Tower and data.ai, Threads was the most downloaded non-gaming app on launch day over the past decade. According to Sensor Tower, as of July 6, there were approximately 40 million downloads worldwide. While Nintendo's Mario Kart Tour is the fastest-growing app of all time, Threads is No. 2, outperforming popular apps like Pokemon GO and Call of Duty Mobile at launch, according to data.ai . Zuckerberg reported that the thread reached 30 million users in less than 24 hours. By comparison, it took Instagram 15 months to reach 30 million downloads, and TikTok reached the milestone in less than two years, according to data.ai. (The ChatGPT app, released late last year, has had nearly 18 million downloads, according to data.ai.) However, that initial figure still pales in comparison to the 368 million users who visit Twitter every day, according to the Business of Apps. .
